]]> Sun Jul 5 2009 100 Jahre Tauernbahn Südrampe / 100 Years Tauernbahn Southern Ramp http://stephenford.fotopic.net/c1770191.html Like another collection in these Galleries, this collection deals with the Centenary celebrations of the opening of the Tauernbahn. The southern ramp opened to traffic on 5 July 1909 and exactly 100 years later we travelled on a special train (Sonderzug) formed of a new RailJet set of coaches pushed by a class 1116 "Taurus" locomotive, 1116 212. Although the destination was given as Pusarnitz the train in fact continued to Spittal-Millstättersee, so that passengers could disembark from the RailJet train if they wished and travel back up the Tauernbahn behind a former DRG class E18, later ÖBB 1020.018-8 and a rake of Nostalie coaches. For most of the route from Pusarnitz onward the RailJet kept parallel with the class 1020 on the other line, stopping only briefly below Kolbnitz because reconstruction work had temporarily reduced the formation to single track. After pausing at Mallnitz-Obervellach both trains continued, in parallel through the 8.7km-long Tauern Tunnel as far as Böckstein. The RailJet contined to Badgastein before reversing, and the 1020 ran round its' train in Böckstein station before returning to Mallnitz. After speeches and other entertainment we caught the RailJet back to Bischofshofen. Badly damaged in World War II, the restaurant was reconstructed in 1947, and the original marble features remained on the walls until September 2009. The restaurant (and dance hall, for the room was used as such throughout its life) has been demolished to make way for two new through platforms in a rebuilt station, which will be finished in 2014. The marble wall paneling, together with one of the vast urns and two chandeliers, have been preserved in case they can be reused in the underpass being built under the existing platforms. Loco and train appear round the bend, and approach Lazonby & Kirkoswald station on the Settle-Carlisle line, on Saturday 3 October 2009 The train, 1Z61 08:20 York via Leeds - Carlisle, bursts out of Lazonby Tunnel 60163 was running 60 minutes later than advertised, but on time according to leaflets published for train users. The train is travelling at around 60 mph. People on the embankment side wave to the train as it passes The train approaches the platforms, whistling furiously 60163 and train dash through the station The train passes some of the 40 or so people gathered on the platforms Everyone turns as the train thunders through the station Having witnessed the passing of 60163, people on the Down platform begin to return to the village. On the return journey 60163 is seen south of Duncowfold The train disappears into a cutting, on its' way back to York. Sunday 19 August 2007: A special excursion to the Austrian "Iron Mountain" - the Erzberg, and a trip on the railway line which links Eisenerz to the north and Vordernberg wo the south, with a tunnel right under the Erzberg. This railway line, once fitted with rack rail for much of its length, is today a Museumbahn open once or twice a week in the summer months.

A very crowded schienenbus The line trails around the base of the mountain To gain height, the line runs up a side valley, before doubling back across this viaduct An ancient railway trackbed is crossed in the centre of the viaduct Many sections of the Erzbergbahn were rack and pinion operated, but the rack has now been removed. The church was built between 1738 and 1774, and is a magnificent example of baroque workmanship. The line is built to 900mm gauge, and contains some of the steepest gradients in Europe surmounted by a railway vehicle without the use of a rack. Each tram is fitted with a pair of caliper pincer brakes, and the rail is milled to a special inverted "V" shape. The line opened to the public on 28 May 1898, and is 2.9km long, during which it rises by 255 metres. The maximum incline is 10.5%. The service runs seven days a week, every day of the year, offering a 20 minute frequency, with more vehicles at peak periods. It is possible to hire a car to take a private party to the mountaintop. Some of the original 1898-built trams are still in occasional use, although cars of more recent vintage are in regular use. The company who stopped the trams running still has a presence in Carlisle. In 1930 the City Council sold the tram system to Ribble Motor Services, who promptly closed it in the following year. In the 1980's and 1990's Ribble and Cumberland Motor Services became part of the Stagecoach Group, and a new bus belonging to that company passes the tram shed. All the company's existing bus fleet was damaged beyond repair on 8th January 2005 when their depot in Willowholme was inundated by floodwater - maybe this depot would have been a safer place to keep them? As can be seen, the land was built up to give a level site for the trams shed. 2- The workshop with its new roof, not substantailly different from the original. 2- Arcading detail around windows 2- On the south side, one or two of the sandstone pieces of ornamentation have survived, together with the rainwater hoppers with a cast device on the front.

Arriving at Blaenau Ffestiniog on the Lancaster Railtours excursion from Carnforth. The slate-coloured landscape is testament to hundreds of years of mining. The old LNWR station at Blaenau Ffestiniog, closed in 1984 but still standing. Ffestiniog Railway 10 Coaches fill to bursting point with participants on the railtour. The driver of A rockface, pinned by bolts, juts over the loco as One of the new Signals at Tanygrisiau. Of a special On leaving Tanygrisiau, the line takes a new course, away from the original route, in order to bypass the Moelwyn Resevior, built over the line of route by the CEGB in the years when the line was not operating. The railway had not, however, closed, and compensation had to be eventually paid by the electricity generating company. On the other side of the resevior, the line describes a complete loop, designed to drop down the hillside quickly. The original route is rejoined, at the now-deserted intermediate station of Dduallt. Minffordd station. The Cambrian Railway station is seen from the Ffestiniog sttaion, with the transfer sidings where slate for exporet was once transhipped

The town has some interesting buildings, but the main focus is the railway yard, workshops, and station. The history of Selzthal begins with the foundation in 1074 of Admont Abbey, and the area was named "Ediltscach", marking the river confluence here. The name itself is derived from "sedlce ", settlement village, or "sedlo ", saddle, both from the Slavic. Since the swampy Talboden could not support colonization, Bavarian incomers started to clear the hillsides of the Dürrenschöberl. By the 13th Century there were 21 farmsteads in the area, and this number remained virtually unchanged until the 18th Century. The area was over-run in 1480 by Turkish invaders, and surviving records show that one Anna Paltauf was drowned by the villagers in 1540 being an alleged witch. By 1770, when Empress Maria Theresia indroduced a Census to aid army conscription, the "Werbbezirke and Konskriptionsgemeindens", there were 27 houses in the community, now called "Zelzthal". In 1872 the Kronprinz-Rudolf-Bahn through the Gesäuse was opened between Selzthal and Weyer, and the area started to assume its' present-day form. The number of people rose dramatically with the coming of the railway, leading to a school opening in 1874, and in 1892 a Jesuit Church was erected. The name of the vilage was changed officially in 1903 to "Selzthal", and with the completion of the line to Linz through the Bosruck tunnel in 1912, traffic increased again, forcing the reconstruction of the station to its' present island platform arrangement. The parish church was erected in 1914. The area became a target in the Second World War, the most serious on Easter Sunday 1945, when 70 people, mainly civilians, were killed. The railway line to Schladming was electrified in 1959, with the Gesäusestrecke being electrified in1970, and more recently the Zentralstellwerke (signal box) was completed, upgrading the railway infrastructure in the the area. Travel was by air from Britain to Geneva Airport, then by train to Bex, and narrow-gauge train to Villars. These pictures were taken during the holiday. The BVB railway line is metre-gauge, 650v overhead electric powered. Except for signals controlling the long curved tunnel on the lower section of line, and those controlling the entrances to Bex and Col de Bretaye stations, the line is worked by radio signalling, with trains operating by 'line of sight' - 'marche de vue' when relief or duplicate services run. The Bex-Chesieres section (where the rack section starts) dates from 1897. The extension to Villars opened in 1899 and the Villars- Col de Bretagne (run by a separate company) from 1911. The two companies merged under the name of BVB in 1943 and saw, in 1977, their concession renewed until 2027. The line was, however, subsequently absorbed by TPC (Transport Publics Du Chablais). The BVB is 17.1 km long, of which 9.7km is rack and pinion. The Height difference between Bex SBB and Cole de Bretaye is 1400m. Approaching St. Gilgen and the Wolfgangsee from Salzburg, the road goes down a steep hill. The railway made a detour to the right of the picture. The Wolfgangsee from the trackbed between St. Gilgen and Gschwand. The view must have been very similar for passengers. When the SKGLB opened, the railway company also started steamer services on the lake, and owned the Schafbergbahn, which went to the top of one of the mountains. The Schafbergbahn and the steamers still operate each Summer St. Gilgen from the trackbed near Gschwand, just as train passengers may have seen it. The trackbed follows the edge of the lake between the southern outskirts of St. Gilgen and the station at Gschwendt Hallstatt Gschwendt, from the road side. Because of a large hedge, and because it is closed in Winter and snow-clearing therefore does not take place, access was impossible. The road side view of Hallstatt Gschwendt, closed for the Winter. During the summer this station still functions, being a stopping point on the Salzkammergut radweg, or cycle way. Hallstatt Gschwendt, now a stopping point on the Salzkammergut cycleway. The Schafbergbahn rack railway still climbs the mountain, though services only operate in the Summer months. Travelling the full line (66.5 km), without the benefit of lighting or heat must have been trying. Loco 69801, built byHenschel (25701) in 1941. In the destruction that followed three people lost their lives, over 3,000 people were evacuated from their homes, and 70,000 properties had no electricity for 30 hours or more. These are a few pictures taken from the north side of the city, which was cut into four sections, with no access between the parts.
